The Biden administration announced Thursday that it would immediately begin to turn away Cubans, Haitians and Nicaraguans who cross the U.S.-Mexico border illegally, seen as a major expansion of an existing effort to do the same to Venezuelans.

President Joe Biden stressed in comments for those looking to enter the U.S. to "stay where you are and apply legally from there."

Biden delivered the remarks about border security alongside Vice-President Kamala Harris, ahead of his intended visit to the US-Mexico border for the first time as president.

There has been a large increase in the number of migrants at the border despite a U.S. health law that allows American authorities to deny entry to many of those seeking asylum.

The Biden administration wants to end Title 42 – former president Trump’s policy which allows border authorities to expel migrants without giving them a chance to seek asylum.

Biden has faced criticism for his approach to the border from Republican lawmakers who question why it has taken so long to visit the U.S.-Mexico border — and say his policies are ineffective.
