U.S. President Joe Biden arrived in El Paso, Texas on Sunday, where he made his first visit to the U.S.-Mexico border as president, after two years of hounding by Republicans who have accused him of being soft on border security as migrant crossings spiral.

El Paso is the biggest corridor for illegal crossings, mainly due to Nicaraguans fleeing repression, crime and poverty in their country. The president met with border officials to discuss migration and the increased trafficking of fentanyl and other synthetic opioids.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, was dismissive of Biden’s visit, saying it was “just a show” and that he had arrived at the border “two years and $20 billion too late.”

Abbott said he has given Biden a letter outlining the steps he could take to secure the border.
