Biden meets with Navalny's wife and daughter, commends family's "incredible courage"

U.S. President Joe Biden met the wife and daughter of Alexei Navalny, the Russian opposition leader who died last week, in San Francisco, Calif., on Thursday.

During the meeting, Biden expressed his admiration for Navalny as a "man of incredible courage" and that it was "amazing" how his wife and daughter have been emulating that. "One thing that was made clear to me, is that Yulia (Navalnaya) is going to continue fighting all the way and [is] not letting up."

Biden also affirmed that the U.S. will announce major new sanctions against Russia on Friday in response to Navalny's death, Russia's repression and aggression and its war in Ukraine.

Navalny, 47, fell unconscious and died suddenly on Friday after a walk at the "Polar Wolf" penal colony above the Arctic Circle, where he was serving a three-decade sentence, the prison service said.
