U.S. President Joe Biden held a longer-than-usual meeting with Pope Francis at the Vatican on Friday during a trip to Europe where he will attend the G20 and COP26 climate summits.

A devout Roman Catholic who goes to weekly mass and keeps a photo of the pope on his Oval Office desk, Biden is visiting the Vatican as a debate raged back home about the Catholic president's support for abortion rights.

During the meeting, Biden told the Pope, with the help of a translator: "You are the most significant warrior for peace I've ever met. And with your permission, I'd like to give you this coin...The tradition -- I'm only kidding about this -- next time I see you, if you don't have it, you have to buy the drinks.''

Biden also joked with 84 year-old Pope Francis that the two were some twenty years younger.
