President Joe Biden’s announcement Sunday that he was stepping down from the 2024 presidential race and his endorsement of Kamala Harris has spurred questions about the future of the Democratic party and the upcoming presidential election.

Eighty-seven percent of Americans in the latest PBS News/NPR/Marist poll said they believed President Joe Biden’s decision to drop out of the 2024 race was the right thing to do. And roughly three-quarters of Democratic voters said Vice President Kamala Harris should lead their ticket for president. When asked who they would support if the election were today, Americans put near equal weight behind former President Donald Trump and Harris. They stood at a virtual tie in a head-to-head matchup, at 46 and 45 percent, respectively — well within the margin of error. Questions on who the vice presidential candidate should be showed Democratic voters giving most support to Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg.
