New chair of the Senate Budget Committee Senator Bernie Sanders on Thursday held a hearing called “Why Should Taxpayers Subsidize Poverty Wages at Large Profitable Corporations?” where the Vermont Senator spoke about the gap between worker's paychecks and CEO salaries and pushed to raise the national minimum wage to $15 an hour.
Executives from Walmart and McDonald’s were invited to the hearing but declined to appear.
"Why should the taxpayers of our country, many of whom are struggling economically as a result of the pandemic, be subsidizing the starvation wages being paid at some of the largest and most profitable corporations in America?" Sanders asked at the opening of the hearing.
