A beluga whale that was stuck in France's River Seine for more than a week died on Wednesday during an ambitious rescue attempt that resulted in the animal having to be euthanized.

Officials confirmed the procedure was performed after the whale began to experience breathing difficulties while in transit to the sea.

"We would have had to say that his condition was not compatible with a release into the sea," veterinarian Ollivet Courtois told reporters.

The planned journey for the whale was risky, with one of the animal experts who took part in the rescue attempt saying the operation had little chance of success. It is still not known how the whale strayed so far from its natural habitat.
