Belarus' government is facing international condemnation after its military jet forced a passenger plane to land, which led to the arrest of a political opponent.

The Ryanair flight from Greece to Lithuania, carrying journalist Roman Protasevich - a staunch critic of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko - was diverted to Belarus' capital over a false bomb threat. Protasevich, who was involved in anti-government protests over last year's disputed elections, was then arrested.

The Lukashenko regime is now blaming the Palestinian militant group Hamas for the bogus threat, although the group has denied its involvement. As Redmond Shannon explains, the European Union is vowing to slap Belarus with another set of sanctions.
