Five million bees and their hives flew off of a truck in the midst of a "hive move" on Wednesday after the driver swerved to avoid a collision in Burlington, Ont. — resulting in the bothered insects wondering around in confusion and irritation.

"I was driving down the road, something ran across — or a bag — and I swerved,” driver Tristan Jameson said. “Nearly swerved into the ditch, tried to correct, and dumped all the hives.”

The beehive dumping prompted Halton Police to quickly close off the area, so the bee retrieval could begin. A successful distress signal intended for local beekeepers resulted in a majority of the pollinating creatures being recovered and returned safely to their hives.

Some of the beehives, however, have been left behind in hopes that the remaining insects will find their way back in due time. Global's Melanie Zettler has the latest.
