B.C. Wildfire Service official Matt MacDonald on Friday provided an outlook on the upcoming wildfire season, saying that as of this week, the province is expecting to see a slow beginning in June. However, he cautioned as the province trends to warmer than normal temperatures there could be fire growth in the latter half of the summer.
But he added more than half of fire ignitions come from lightning and a "big factor" will be if that it is accompanied by rain, but it's difficult to forecast.
B.C. Forests Minister Katrine Conroy said on Friday that the government, through the FireStart program, $90 million would be provided to homeowners and communities for information and tools needed to protect homes and neighbourhoods.
She said communities can apply for the funding to cover the costs of projects that help reduce wildfire risk.
The cool, damp spring has eased wildfire worries so far but several regions are still being closely monitored, including the Okanagan, Thompson-Nicola and the Peace regions.
