Police in the Azerbaijani capital, Baku, detained about a dozen journalists from the online Toplum TV channel on Wednesday, after searching their offices.

The Interior Ministry confirmed "operative measures" and searches had been conducted at the channel's offices and other addresses, saying it would provide additional information later.

Toplum TV's editor-in-chief Khadija Ismayilova, a former bureau chief in Baku and one of the country's most renowned investigative journalists, said that there was “no plausible explanation” for the detainment and that there was “no legal basis” for a criminal case.

“The explanation is that [the authorities] just want to abolish all media organizations in the country, so that no media organization remains in the country, no one voices critical opinions, and there is no platform for critical opinions to be voiced,” Ismayilova said. “We are just another step in the wave of repression in the country.”
