Jeremy Hunt has announced an extra £2.3bn per year for education, saying: "Our message to heads and teachers today is thank you for your brilliant work, we need it to continue."

He rejected scrapping the VAT exemption status for private schools - a policy championed by Labour.

He added that he wants to be "practical" instead of "ideological".
