Austria's liberal president, Alexander Van der Bellen, was on course to win re-election in Sunday's vote without needing to go to a runoff after initial projections showed him winning more than 55 per cent of the vote, with more than half the ballots counted.
Van der Bellen faced several other candidates, though he had the implicit or explicit backing of Austria's mainstream parties. The only party currently in parliament fielding a candidate against him was the far-right Freedom Party. Its candidate, Walter Rosenkranz, was expected to get around 18 per cent of the vote.
Several of his supporters who had gathered in Vienna cheered as initial results showed the incumbent ahead of the 50 per cent mark to avoid a runoff, with some expressing hope he will be able to tackle potential crises in the country.
"I hope that there will be no further crises in Austria, or no such major crises, but if there are, I feel safe with him as president," supporter Oliver Schmidt said.
