Australia's Labor Party leader Anthony Albanese was sworn in Monday, local time, as the country's 31st prime minister, promising a "journey of change" as he had vowed to tackle climate change, rising living costs and inequality. Albanese was sworn in by Gov. Gen. David Hurley at a ceremony in Canberra.

Labor returns to power after nine years in opposition buoyed by a wave of unprecedented support for the Greens and climate-focused independents, helped oust the conservative Liberal-National coalition in this year's election.

While the votes are still being counted and the makeup of the government still to be finalized, Albanese's party is just a few seats shy of a majority, but was sworn in so he could attend a key meeting of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue in Tokyo on Tuesday.
