Australia locks down Sydney, Darwin as COVID-19 Delta variant cases surge

The highly contagious COVID-19 Delta variant is forcing Australia to put millions back into to lockdown, as infection numbers surge, leading to a major blow to the country's zero-COVID strategy.

Sydney, Australia’s largest city and home to a fifth of the country’s 25 million population, began a two-week lockdown on Sunday while the northern city of Darwin began a two-day stay-at-home order.

Snap lockdowns, tough social distancing rules and swift contact tracing had up to this point helped Australia to successfully suppress past outbreaks.

As Redmond Shannon reports, there is concern that Australia's low vaccination rates are failing to keep up.
