August 13, 2021: Taliban, COVID-19 vaccine boosters, Texas Dems, U.S. census, England mass shooting

1. Taliban insurgents tightened their grip on Afghanistan, wresting control of its second and third biggest cities while Western embassies prepared to send in troops to help evacuate staff from the capital, Kabul.

2. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorized a booster dose of COVID-19 vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna for people with compromised immune systems.

3. Texas Democratic lawmakers, scattered around the country, said they were more determined than ever to block voting restrictions in their state, after the state supreme court ruled they could be arrested for fleeing Austin in July to deny Republicans the quorum needed to pass the bill.

4. New U.S. census data released show the white population declined for the first time in history last decade, with significant increases among people who identify as multi-racial, Hispanic and Asian driving much of the population growth between 2010 and 2020.

5. Six people, including a child, were killed in a mass shooting in the city of Plymouth in southwest England, in an incident described by the British Home Secretary as “shocking”.
