A shooting at a construction site near Auckland’s city centre left two dead and several injured, New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins announced on Thursday.

In addition to the two fatalities, Hipkins confirmed the male shooter was found dead by Auckland police shortly after reports of an active shooter came in.

The shooting came a mere few hours before the opening game of the annual soccer Women’s World Cup at Eden Park in the New Zealand city.

Though the 44-year-old leader said he had limited details and a police investigation is ongoing, he confirmed there would be no change to the national threat level.
