Dozens of demonstrators who are angry over worsening economic conditions in Syria stormed the governor's office in the southern city of Sweida on Sunday. They set fire to parts of the building amid a heavy exchange of gunfire, according to local authorities and witnesses.

Earlier in the day, more than 200 people had gathered around the building in the centre of the religious Druze-majority city, chanting slogans calling for the overthrow of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad amid spiralling prices and economic hardship.

"Our message today is to the regime: You see how people are dying from starvation. People are waiting for aid," one protester was heard saying in a video released by a local website, Suwayda 24.

A source in the city hospital said one civilian who was being treated had died from gunshot wounds, while another was still in hospital after being shot. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Interior said protesters had tried to seize the city's police headquarters, and that one policeman was killed in the ensuing clashes.
