Four astronauts splashed down off the coast of Florida in a SpaceX capsule on Tuesday after a six-month stay aboard the International Space Station (ISS) and a day-long flight home.
The Dragon vehicle, dubbed Endeavour, parachuted into the sea as planned following a fiery re-entry descent through Earth’s atmosphere.
Eyewitness videos showed the capsule streaking across the night sky over New Orleans as it made its way back to Earth.
Applause was heard from the flight control centre as the four main parachutes inflated and it drifted down toward the Gulf of Mexico, slowing its speed to just 24 km per hour, before dropping into the sea.
Comprising the crew were two NASA astronauts, mission commander Shane Kimbrough and pilot Megan McArthur, as well as Japanese astronaut Akihiko Hoshide and mission specialist Thomas Pesquet, a French engineer from the European Space Agency.
It was the third crew launched into orbit under NASA’s fledgling partnership with SpaceX, the rocket company formed in 2002 by billionaire Elon Musk.
