A newly published piece of audio claims to show that Julian Assange warned the US State Department about damaging data leaks in 2011.

In the recording, released by conservative organization Project Veritas, Assange allegedly speaks on the phone to Cliff Johnson, an attorney at the State Department, warning him that an archive of 250,000 department cables containing classified information was being ‘spread around’ the internet by a suspended WikiLeaks staff member who had obtained the encryption key to the files.

Assange tells Johnson that WikiLeaks was not behind the release and expresses concern for government employees who may be ‘outed’ in the leak. He asks Johnson to warn ‘any individuals’ who ‘should be warned’ and even suggests that the US government covertly remove the files from the internet, offering to help track down the files.

If verified, it adds weight to the claim that rather than an agent acting against the US – as he has been almost unanimously portrayed by politicians across the country’s political spectrum – Assange tried to limit the damage to the country.

It will also add to the mounting pressure on US President Donald Trump to pardon Assange before he leaves office in January.
