In India’s Assam state, 1.9 million people are facing a battle to prove they belong.

They have been declared foreigners after the state created a National Register of Citizens, demanding that anyone not on the list prove their citizenship.

Most of those fighting to prove their citizenship are Muslim, prompting claims that authorities are falsely branding them illegal migrants from Bangladesh in an attempt to appeal to hardline Hindus.

Many now live in fear that they could be deported or sent to detention centres and made stateless.

101 East investigates their desperate quest to prove who they really are.
