The state government of Sao Paulo has imposed new coronavirus emergency measures, including a nighttime curfew, a ban on sporting events and the closure of all non-essential businesses.
They are to last a minimum of 15 days.
But protesters, many of them supporters of President Jair Bolsonaro, took to the streets to oppose the measures.
The president has repeatedly opposed lockdowns, saying they are not necessary and are hurt the economy.
Many cities and states have been tightening lockdowns as hospitals are stretched to capacity.

Al Jazeera’s Daniel Schweimler reports from Buenos Aires in neighbouring Argentina.
