Ryanair has become the latest airline to post a massive rise in profits this year. Its first half earnings are up almost 60% on a year earlier. Surging demand for flights and a shortage of aircraft have seen European air fares raise to around 30% above their pre-pandemic levels. So, can regulators do anything to bring down prices for air passengers? That’s a question we put to Steven Truxal, professor of air and space law at Leiden University in the Netherlands.
