On Tuesday, archaeologists discovered five mummies in Lima, Peru that are believed to be about 1,000 years old.

The mummies are said to belong to four children and an adult from the pre-Inca Ychsma culture, which existed from approximately 900 to 1450 AD.

“It was a very important ceremonial atrium where the people who lived in the time of the Ychsma considered it a sacred space and therefore buried their dead here," Luis Takuda, an archaeologist from Peru, said.

Additionally, the researchers found a 3,500 B.C. staircase that is thought to belong to the Manchay culture.
