Defence Minister Anita Anand commented on a recent report that the Canadian military had found and retrieved Chinese monitoring buoys in the Arctic this past fall, confirming she was "fully aware" of the buoys but adding that this type of activity was "not new."
The Globe and Mail reported the buoys were spotted as part of Operation Limpid, which was a continuing effort to provide early detection of threats to Canada's security.
Anand said the Canadian Armed Forces would continue to do what is necessary to protect the population and contribute to the work of both the Five Eyes alliance and NATO. She went on to discuss the release of Canada's Indo-Pacific strategy, saying the government would "challenge China where we ought to and we will cooperate where we need to." She also cited the shooting down of an object above the Yukon two weekends ago, saying it was an example that Canada would do what is necessary to protect the country and its airspace.
Asked how concerned should Canadians be with the recent activity both in terms of buoys and balloons, Anand said it was a reason to continue to protect the Arctic and Arctic sovereignty.
