Vladimir Putin often likes to raise "the nuclear spectre" and his most recent comments that Russia is ready to use nuclear weapons should not be taken seriously, says our defence and security analyst Michael Clarke.

Mr Putin said in an interview that Moscow was prepared for a nuclear confrontation if there was a threat to Russia's sovereignty or security.
