Amy Coney Barrett was confirmed to the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday as an associate justice, marking one of the speediest confirmations for a justice on the nation's highest court and President Donald Trump's third nomination in just one term.

It came after the death of long-time justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and amid uproar by the Democrats, calling the rush to confirm by Republicans who control the Senate a moment of "shame." Part of the reason was due to Republicans stalling the confirmation of former president Barack Obama's final nomination of Merrick Garland in 2016 to fill the spot left by Antonin Scalia. Following this, several Republicans said they would hold this same standard were Trump to become president and if a spot opened in 2020, which Democrats say is a stance they've broken.

The confirmation of Coney Barrett is expected to solidify a 6-3 conservative court majority for years to come.
