Richard "Alex" Murdaugh denied he had murdered his son and wife as he took the stand in his own defence on Thursday, but admitted to lying to investigators about when he last saw them alive.

"Mr. Griffin, I didn't shoot my wife or my son anything, ever," he told his lawyer, Jim Griffin, during questioning.

Murdaugh, the disbarred South Carolina attorney charged with murdering his wife and son, was indicted by a grand jury in July on two counts of murder and two counts of possession of a weapon in connection with the shootings. He pleaded not guilty.

Prosecutors already spent four weeks painting Murdaugh as a liar, who stole money from clients, and decided to kill his wife and son because he wanted sympathy to buy time to cover up his financial crimes that were about to be discovered.

Murdaugh's wife, Maggie, and 22-year-old son, Paul, were both gunned down near dog kennels on the family's estate on June 7, 2021.
