Authorities said on Wednesday that actor Alec Baldwin fired a 45 caliber Colt pistol loaded with a live lead bullet in last week's accidental fatal shooting on the New Mexico set of his movie "Rust," where they say filmmakers showed "complacency" toward safety.

Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza and District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies told a news conference that while no charges have been filed, they are not ruling out that possibility in the shooting that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins during a rehearsal.

Authorities have the firearm used in the shooting, Mendoza said, and have recovered the bullet from the shoulder of director Joel Souza, who was wounded but later released from the hospital. Mendoza said it appears the same bullet struck Souza and Hutchins.

"We suspect that there are other live rounds, but that's up to the testing. But right now, we're going to determine how those got there and why they were there, because they shouldn't have been," he told reporters.

Baldwin, 63, who's said to be incredibly distraught by the incident, described the killing as a "tragic accident."
