An elderly Alaskan man has died from Alaskapox, a virus first discovered in 2015, in what is the first known human fatality linked to the pathogen.

The man, from the Kenai Peninsula south of Anchorage, was hospitalized in November. Health officials announced on Feb. 9 that he had tested positive for Alaskapox and died in January.

To date, there have been seven reported Alaskapox infections and until the recent fatal case, all infections occurred in residents of the Fairbanks area.
Kat Ward has more on what we know about the virus and the threat level it poses.
