Months of mass protests led Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to pause the reform that critics say would undermine the independence of the Supreme Court and erode the country's democracy and civil liberties. Prominent US lawyer Alan Dershowitz says Netanyahu's proposed judicial reforms would weaken Israel's highest court.

The fierce defender of Israel, and veteran attorney opposes the changes but says "I don´t believe this is the business of anybody but Israelis."

"Europe should butt out," Dershowitz added.

The retired Harvard law professor told DW's Tim Sebastian the international community in general and Europe in particular had nothing to say on the matter. Dershowitz said Netanyahu told him he wants "balance." The veteran attorney said he thought even if the reforms were adopted Israel would remain "a vibrant, vital democracy."
