The three men on trial for the killing of Ahmaud Arbery while he was out running through a Georgia neighbourhood in 2020 were found guilty of murder by a jury on Wednesday.
Travis McMichael was found guilty of all counts, including malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault and false imprisonment. His father Gregory McMichael was found not guilty of malice murder, but found guilty on all other counts including felony murder and aggravated assault. The third man, William "Roddie" Bryan who had filmed part of the encounter between the men and Arbery, was found guilty of six counts including felony murder and false imprisonment.
The verdict comes after the jury deliberated for one day on their decision after the weeks-long trial. The minimum penalty for murder is life in prison with possibility for parole after 30 years at the discretion of the judge. A date for sentencing has not yet been set.
On Feb. 23, 2020, Arbery, a 25-year-old Black man, was killed while running through a mostly white neighbourhood after being chased by the three men.
