A senior Palestinian official condemned Israel on Tuesday after six Palestinians, including a leader of a rising militant group, were killed in a clash with Israeli forces during a military raid in the West Bank city of Nablus. This set off one of the largest firefights in weeks, according to Palestinian officials.

"This Israeli escalation is crossing all the red lines with the Palestinians... We urge the American administration to put enough pressure, and serious pressure, on this Israeli government to stop this escalation," spokesman for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Nabil Abu Rudeineh, said.

Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid praised the forces and pledged to pursue "those who try to attack us."

"We will not permit the existence of terrorist organizations that harm Israeli civilians and army soldiers. The assassination of the head of the Lion's Den organization, Waddia Al-Houh, along with additional terrorists, is the result of joint efforts by the security forces – the army, Israel Securities Authority and the Israel National Counter-Terrorism Unit last night in Nablus," he said.

The "Den of Lions," a group of mainly young Nablus gunmen with loose factional affiliations, has grown rapidly over the past year and fought repeated clashes with Israeli forces as violence has surged across the West Bank in recent months.
