Six people have died climbing the Klyuchevskaya Sopka volcano in Russia's far east and six more were believed to be stranded on Sunday, after severe winds forced authorities to abandon a rescue attempt.

The group of 12, which included two guides, set off to climb the 4,754-metre volcano on Tuesday but ran into difficulty after one tourist fell to their death at an altitude of almost 4,200 metres on Saturday, authorities said.

"Rescuers from the Kamchatka Search and Rescue Team with the National Air Rescue Service have made another, third, emergency attempt to get to the tourist group at Klyuchevskoy volcano, but the stormy wind prevented the helicopter from landing. So, we were forced to retreat," said rescue official Igor Sesterov.

Representative from the prosecutor’s office of the Kamchatka Region For Media Relations Elizaveta Denisyuk added that they will be checking with tourist tour organizations for potential additional casualties.
