Just days after former U.S. president Donald Trump became a convicted felon, his Republican allies are still coming to his defence and seeking to have his guilty verdicts overturned. But the appeals process could take months or longer.

Trump's status has led some Americans to call on Trump to bow out of the 2024 race, with his sentencing set for just days before he formally accepts his party's nomination.

According to a new poll, 50 per cent of Americans say the verdict was correct. And while 49 per cent say Trump should exit the race, 84 per cent of Republicans disagree.

There are growing calls for the Biden campaign to seize on this moment and make Trump's felonies a top issue, while Republicans turn their focus to a gun crimes trial against Hunter Biden.
