“We will not allow China to isolate Taiwan,” Nancy Pelosi speaks for 1st time since Asia trip | FULL

U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi held a press conference on Wednesday for the first time since her visit to the self-ruled island last week, addressing the rising tensions between China and Taiwan as well as issues ranging from human rights to computer chip production from her overseas trip.

Starting off by saying that there was no U.S. departure from its existing position, Pelosi also firmly added that “in keeping with that, we will not allow China to isolate Taiwan. They have kept Taiwan from participating in the World Health Organization (WHO) and other things, where Taiwan would make a very valuable contribution. They may keep them from going there, but they’re not keeping us from going to Taiwan. We will not allow them to.”

“We want to make sure what happened in Ukraine does not happen with regard to the Southeast Asian region, specifically Taiwan,” Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Ill. 8th District) added afterwards. He said that “if the cost of avoiding these types of provocative measures is to cede control of Taiwan to the People’s Republic of China (PRC) or to cede control of our travel schedules in Congress to the PRC, that is not a price we are going to pay.”

China had announced new military drills around Taiwan on Monday, a day after the scheduled end of Beijing's largest exercises to protest last week's visit to the island by Pelosi and her delegation, eliciting concern from U.S. President Joe Biden.

Taiwan's foreign minister said on Tuesday that China's military drills were an excuse to prepare for an invasion of Taiwan. In the past, China has not ruled out the annexation of Taiwan by force if necessary and views visits by foreign government officials as recognition of the island's sovereignty.
