U.S. President Joe Biden on Friday announced hundreds of new sanctions against Russia in retaliation for the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, adding that he would soon be speaking with other G7 leaders as well as the heads of the European Union and NATO.
The U.S. sanctions, which come as the world marks two years since Russia invaded Ukraine, target more than 500 Russian people and entities.
Russia’s state-owned National Payment Card System, the operator of the Mir payment system, SPB Bank, gold producer Uzhuralzoloto and Russian steelmaker Mechel are among the businesses to be sanctioned.
Biden also criticized the U.S. House of Representatives for taking a two-week “vacation” rather than voting on a major national security bill that would provide aid for Ukraine.
