Displaced from their homes in Sfax, Tunisia, African migrants — kept in a desolate Sahara military area on the border of Libya since early July — say they have been living in conditions so horrendous that they’re asking the United Nations to step in and provide aid.
“There are so many snakes here. There’s no food … we’re suffering. We need help from the UN,” said Atchik, a migrant from Niger.
The mass transfers of people began on July 5, following a week-long outbreak of violence where migrants and residents clashed with one another.
During the disturbances, residents of Sfax complained of disorderly behaviour by migrants, while migrants complained of racist harassment from locals.
As migration has increased massively over the last two weeks, Tunisia has been put under pressure to stop people from departing from its coasts.
