With few COVID-19 restrictions in place across the United States, an expected spike in COVID-19 cases this winter could collide with a resurgent flu season and a worrying upward trend in the number of cases of a third pathogen, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
Children infected with respiratory illnesses like RSV are already being admitted in significant numbers at hospitals across the U.S., putting a strain on emergency rooms — and the number of flu cases is also expected to soar in the coming weeks.
“We haven’t had a lot of respiratory illnesses for two-and-a-half years now. People have maintained physical distance, people have worn masks and that just keeps you from getting ill — and by not getting ill, you don’t develop antibodies,” explains Dr. Russell Vinik of the University of Utah Health.
Though RSV doesn’t have a vaccine, doctors are urging people to get the COVID-19 and flu shots to prevent serious illness.
Reggie Cecchini has more on the fears of a potential “tripledemic.”
