Alan Kats, the man at the centre of Monday’s triple shooting in North York, Ont., died in an apparent murder-suicide in which Arash Missaghi and Samira Yousefi were killed.

Kats and his wife lost more than $1.2 million — described as their life savings — victims in a syndicated mortgage scheme.

The couple allege that Missaghi and Yousefi took the money, but didn’t register mortgages as promised. As a result, they lost the equity in their home.

Missaghi’s been linked to other financial crimes and faced charges, but they were dropped.

“The justice system let me down,” Kats’ wife Alisa Pogorelovsky said.
