After standing trial in a British court on Thursday, Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg told media and bystanders that “we must remember who the real enemy is.”

The 21-year-old said that activists are being prosecuted for “acting in line with science,” rather than the “corporations” that are “destroying and destabilizing the climate and the biosphere and the very living conditions that we humans depend on to survive.”

Thunberg, along with four other activists, was charged by authorities with a public order offence for blocking the entrance to an oil and gas industry conference in London, England, as part of a protest in October 2023.

All five defendants pleaded not guilty. If they are convicted, they will each face a maximum fine of £2,500.

Thunberg became a prominent campaigner worldwide after staging weekly protests in front of the Swedish parliament in 2018.
