A 10-year-old girl was shot dead in Afghanistan while her family was preparing to flee to Canada under an immigration program for Afghans who worked for the Canadian Forces, multiple sources said Thursday.

Ottawa had originally promised to help tens of thousands of Afghans.

During the last federal election campaign, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau vowed to bring 40,000 of them to Canada, including those who supported the Canadian military mission. So far, about 5,000 have arrived, but many are still at the mercy of bureaucratic red tape and the delays are proving to be deadly for some people who were already approved to be resettled in Canada.

Global’s Jeff Semple has the story of a 10-year-old girl named Nazifa.
