U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland took aim at former U.S. Donald Trump's Republican allies in the House of Representatives in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, where he accused them of peddling false narratives that endanger law enforcement and undermine the Justice Department's integrity.

"I will not be intimidated," Garland told lawmakers before the House Judiciary Committee. "And the Justice Department will not be intimidated. We will continue to do our jobs free from political influence. And we will not back down from defending our democracy."

In opening statements, House Judiciary Committee chairman and Republican lawmaker Jim Jordan said that “justice is no longer blind in America” but that it’s currently “driven by politics.” Meanwhile, House Judiciary Committee minority member and Democratic representative Jerrold Nadler said that Republicans “just care about getting their favourite felon back in the White House.”

Tuesday marked the first time Garland has appeared before Congress since a Manhattan jury convicted presumptive Republican presidential candidate Trump on 34 counts of falsifying documents to cover up a payment to silence a porn star before the 2016 election.
