Shanghai, China sprung back to life on Wednesday after two months of isolation under a strict COVID-19 lockdown, with midnight celebrations, shops reopening and people returning to the streets.

Most of Shanghai's 25 million residents can now freely leave home, return to work, use public transport and drive their cars. During the past two months, numerous residents of one of the country's most important financial and economic hub reported struggles to get enough food or medical care.

“I feel at peace after leaving home this morning, yet I also feel a sense of shame,” one local resident said of the lockdown lift. “In the past two months, things like losing jobs and family members because of the pandemic have been forgotten in this split second.”

Shanghai's approach was the result of China's "zero COVID" strategy of eradicating outbreaks, going against the global trend of reopening and loosening restrictions.

Despite the lockdown ending, there were still long queues at PCR testing sites and vaccination centres on Wednesday, with recent negative results and face masks required for public transportation and buildings indoors.
