A car slammed at high speed into carnival attendees in a small town in southern Belgium on Sunday, killing six people and leaving 10 more with life-threatening injuries. Several dozen more received less serious injuries.
“It was a catastrophe, it could be considered a national catastrophe,” said Jacques Gobert, the mayor of the neighbouring town, La Louvière.
Two locals in their thirties were arrested at the scene in Strépy-Bracquegnies, some 50 kilometres south of Brussels. The prosecutor’s office said that in the early stages of the investigation, there are no elements to suggest a terror motive.
Police denied media reports that the car was involved in a high-speed chase.
