The minister of police toured Durban's townships on Saturday, promising to investigate crimes committed by all communities.
Looting and rioting have swept through parts of the country over the last week, killing more than 200 people.
Durban has been quieter these last couple of days, but it is a calm sometimes enforced at gunpoint.
Some communities have set up vigilante groups to defend their homes and businesses.
