‘Another example of catastrophic neglect of the Palestinian people’

Dr James Smith, an emergency room physician who previously worked in Gaza hospitals, called what Israel’s military is doing at Nasser Hospital “another egregious attack” on a medical facility protected by international rules of war.

He noted there’s been about 400 attacks on health centres since the war began in October.

“It’s complete neglect of the rules that guide conduct during armed conflict,” said Dr Smith. “We’re hearing reports of patients being killed in their hospital beds, artillery fired directly into the hospital, patients killed because electricity was cut. It’s another example of the catastrophic neglect of the Palestinian people. It is beyond tragic and fills you with sadness and rage.”

The UN court’s recent genocide ruling means the international community must do more to halt Israel’s war crimes, Smith told Al Jazeera.

“That places immediate moral, political and legal obligations on all world powers, particularly those that up until this moment continue to finance and provide diplomatic support for the Israeli state.”
