In an effort to boost recruitment numbers, the province of Ontario is working to waive the post-secondary requirements to become a police officer.

On Tuesday morning, Ontario premier Doug Ford made an announcement on increasing police recruitment. Alongside waiving the Ontario police college's $15,000 tuition fee and expanding its yearly enrolment, Ford also said the province would work to axe the OPC’s post-secondary education requirement.

But there is some confusion on whether that legislation would actually change the level of education needed to become a police officer, and whether an officer hiring blitz will take place in the future. However, as the police budget is already set, officials say none is expected at this time.

Global’s Sam Houpt takes a look at how the change could impact the local police service in the city of Peterborough.
