The Vatican says Pope Francis is willing to come to Canada to meet with Indigenous leaders, though a date has not been set yet for him to do so.
He’s faced pressure to do so since 2015, when the Truth and Reconciliation Commission released a report with 94 calls to action. Those calls grew louder in the wake of the May 2020 discovery of 215 remains at a former B.C. residential school.
But as Raquel Fletcher explains, it’s unclear if the Pope plans to apologize for the Catholic Church's role in the residential school system.
