Widow of Haiti's slain President Jovenel Moïse speaks out | DW News

Haiti's interim government has asked the US and UN for help in stabilizing the country after President Jovenel Moise's assassination. Many Haitians are alarmed by foreign involvement in the attack, which also left his wife wounded. She has now spoken to her fellow citizens, via audio message, for the first time since her husband was slain.
The streets bear the scars of a violent arrest, where Colombian mercenaries fought with Haitian police hours after they allegedly assassinated President Jovenel Moise.
His wife, Martine Moïse, survived the attack, and from a US hospital, she described the killing of her husband. She urged Haitians to remain united.
Investigations are underway into the murder, with more than a dozen Colombian mercenaries arrested or killed. Two Haitian-Americans have also been detained.
The foreign involvement in the assassination has struck a nerve in a country with a history of suffering the consequences of international interference.
Haiti's elections minister defended the government's request for help from the US military. So far the US has not announced its decision.
The leadership power vacuum after the assassination has thrown Haiti into another state of unrest, as Haitians deal with another setback on the journey to self-determination and political stability.
